Fast Company has a great business travel tip: get a one-day passes to your favorite airline’s business lounge. Different airlines have different clubs and policies, but several do offer access for a nominal fee. Most of the lounges include a business center equipped with desks, dataports, computers, wireless hot spots, faxes: all of the business travel goodies lacking in the common area in the main terminal. Lamenting your life as a road warrior? Here are some additional words of travel-weary wisdom:
Keep a bag packed at home: You never know when you’re going to need to travel out of town on short notice. Prevent frazzled, last minute rushing around by keeping a travel bag packed and ready to go in your closet. Besides a suit and comfortable business shoes, include toiletries, regular medications, mints, business cards, and extra power cords and flash drives for your laptop. Just be prepared to be forced to dump those liquids.
Roll your laptop: Save yourself an excruciating backache by rolling a laptop carry case instead of lugging it around on your shoulder. You’d be surprised how heavy all of that computer hardware can be after a day on the road.
Fly during business hours: Inevitably, taking a business trip means working longer hours anyway, so don’t be a martyr and volunteer to take a red-eye flight. You’re already stressed out, why should you be bone tired too? Also, don’t feel obligated to work during the flight out. Use the time to relax and mentally prepare yourself for the trip ahead.
Pay someone to drive you around: Even if you take pride in your sense of direction, do you really want to be bothered with navigating a rental car through the bowels of a strange city? If your company will allow it, stick to taxis or corporate cars. Just don’t forget the extra cash in case the driver doesn’t take credit cards.
