Vical Incorporated researches and develops biopharmaceutical products based on its deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) delivery technologies for the prevention and treatment of serious or life-threatening diseases. In addition, the Company has gained access to enhancing technologies through licensing and collaborative agreements. Vical, together with its licensees and collaborators, is developing a number of DNA-based vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention or treatment of infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. As of December 31, 2005, the Company's independent development focus is on its novel plasmids (pDNA) vaccines for cytomegalovirus (CMV) and avian influenza, as well as its cancer immunotherapeutic, IL-2 EP. All of Vical's potential products are in research and development phases. No revenues have been generated from the sale of any such products. For the three months ended 31 March 2006, Vical Incorporated's revenues totaled $5.6M, up from $2.7M. Net loss fell 41% to $4.5M. Revenues reflect higher contract & grant revenues generated from higher production orders for clinical costs of DNA vaccines against HIV for the VRC. Lower loss was partially offset by higher research & development expenses and increased general & administrative expenses.
