Carriage Services, Inc. (Carriage) is a provider of death care services and merchandise in the United States. The Company operates in two segments: funeral home operations, which principally service businesses that provide burial and cremation services and sell related merchandise, such as caskets and urns, and cemetery operations, which provides interment rights (grave sites and mausoleums) and related merchandise, such as markers and memorials. Funeral home operations segment accounted for approximately 75% of Carriage's total revenue during the year ended December 31, 2005. Cemetery operations accounted for approximately 25% of the Company's total revenue in 2005. As of December 31, 2005, Carriage operated 133 funeral homes in 28 states and 29 cemeteries in 12 states. The Company provides funeral and cemetery services and products on both an at-need (time of death) and pre-need (planned prior to death) basis. For the three months ended 31 March 2006, Carriage Services, Inc.'s revenues increased 2% to $41.7M. Net income from continuing operations before accounting change totaled $1.5M, vs. a loss of $1.4M. Revenues reflect higher Cemetery & Funeral revenues. Net loss also reflects a decrease in the general & administrative expenses, absence of additional interest & other costs of senior debt refinancing and higher interest & other income.
